Browser game files: imports, demos and saves

Compare Halo XISO, Vice City game.tar.gz, Diablo MPQ and WebXash folders. Choose a demo or import your own files, then back up saves.

Halo, Skate 3 and Vice City need data from a game copy you own. Diablo and WebXash also offer limited demos, while some launchers download their resources for you. Match the required format before importing, and keep a separate save backup before changing browsers or clearing site data.

Choose a download, a demo or your own files

Start with the setup type that fits what you already have. A downloaded engine does not necessarily include the full game, and a save file does not replace the required game data.

SetupWhat you provideFirst action
Project downloadNo local archive requested by that launcherChoose a map or Play, then let resources load.
Limited demoNo full-game data needed for the supplied demoChoose the demo before attempting a full-game import.
Own game filesThe exact format prepared from your own copyRead the project’s preparation instructions, then use its file picker.

Match the file format to the launcher

These formats belong to different projects. Follow the preparation guidance in Halo’s desktop launcher, Halo CE Mobile, Skate 3 or Vice City. Renaming a file does not convert it into another game’s format. For touch layouts and storage on phones, see the iPhone and Android guide.

Try a demo without importing the full game

Diablo Web’s instructions distinguish Play Free Demo from Load Your MPQ. The demo is limited shareware; DIABDAT.MPQ supplies the full-game data. WebXash’s Half-Life demo choices are another short starting point. Pick a demo, let its download finish and learn the controls before preparing a larger import.

Keep WebXash folders inside the parent folder or ZIP

For Open game Folder, select the parent containing valve and, for Counter-Strike, cstrike. Choose the game directory after the folder loads. For Open ZIP, preserve those directories at the archive’s top level instead of flattening their files. The maintainer’s file-layout examples show both structures; a correctly prepared ZIP starts the game when selected.

Export progress before changing browsers

Keep game data and saves as separate backups. In Diablo, open Manage Saves and download the saves you want. WebXash’s save panel can download Half-Life saves; it is disabled for Counter-Strike. Halo CE Mobile has Export saved games under Settings and data. These local copies do not automatically move to another browser profile, so confirm your backup before removing site storage.

Let the first download or import finish

A large first load can be normal. RTCW’s launcher lists about 380 MB initially and caches it afterward. Watch for changing progress and keep the tab open. For Vice City, wait until import finishes before selecting Start to play. If progress stops or a file is rejected, use the loading guide to find the next step.
