About The Need for Speed
The Need for Speed is the series’ original sports-car racing game, built around choosing a car, a route and a style of race. It puts the appeal of recognizable performance cars next to the practical challenge of driving them well. The important actions are familiar but demanding in combination: accelerate, judge a corner, brake at the right time and keep the car pointed toward the road ahead.
A good first session focuses on consistency rather than maximum speed. Pick one car and keep using it until its response feels familiar. Then learn a route well enough to anticipate a difficult turn instead of reacting when you are already inside it. The original game’s race and transmission choices let you adjust the challenge, so use a straightforward setup while you learn. A clean run with fewer collisions is a better foundation than a fast opening section followed by repeated crashes.
How to play
- Choose a car, route and race type from the original game’s menus.
- Control acceleration, steering and braking to stay on a clean racing line.
- Improve your pace by learning corners, traffic conditions and the selected car’s behavior.
Beginner tips
- Use one car and one route until you can anticipate the hardest corners.
- Brake before turning sharply, then apply power once the car is settled.
- Start with automatic shifting if manual gears are distracting you from the road.
