About Celeste Classic

Celeste Classic is the small PICO-8 mountain-climbing game created by Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry before the later commercial Celeste. Its rooms turn a few movement abilities into concise platforming puzzles. Jumping, wall movement and a directional dash help you find a way upward, while hazards make the difference between a plausible route and a safe one immediately apparent.

The compact format rewards trying an idea, noticing what went wrong and adjusting the next attempt. Your dash is a resource to plan around, with landing and certain objects restoring it, so reaching a useful recovery point is often part of the solution. Optional fruit can make a room more demanding. Work toward the exit first, then try a more ambitious route once the basic sequence feels reliable.

How to play

  • Combine jumps, wall jumps and directional dashes to climb.
  • Plan recovery points for your available dash.
  • Reach each room's upper exit and attempt optional fruit routes.

Beginner tips

  • Save your dash for the gap that a normal jump cannot cover.
  • Use wall jumps to gain height before committing to a dash.
  • Learn the exit route before detouring for a difficult berry.
